Elizabeth R. Hobbs

Elizabeth R. “Buffy” (Weber) Hubel Hobbs, 82, of North Syracuse passed away on Monday, March 1, 2021 at her home. Born in Fulton, she was the daughter of William and Dorothy (Bintz) Weber. Buffy was a liturgical seamstress, specializing in vestments and altar dressings for the clergy and churches of all denominations. Her work can still be found world wide, including at the Vatican, and more locally as St. Patrick’s wardrobe as he leads the Syracuse St. Patrick’s Day parade. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church of Cicero and was very active in the church throughout her life. Buffy self styled herself as the “meanest mother on the block” and acted as a guiding hand for not only her children, but also their friends and the children of the community, teaching CCD at Sacred Heart Church and St. Rose of Lima church in North Syracuse. She was also an active participant in the Irish Dance community and Project Children. She was a voracious reader, scrapbooker, and excelled at many yarn crafts. She was an avid gardener, an activity that started out of the need to feed her family, but evolved into a lifelong passion. Buffy maintained friendships that lasted a lifetime, some starting in kindergarten, others more recent, but all equally dear. Buffy is predeceased by her husband, F. James Hobbs. She is survived by her children, Susan Hubel Potter, Michael (Diana) Hubel and his children Elizabeth and Caitlin, William (Karen) Hubel and children Michael and Hunter, Jean “Jaye” (Thomas) Tsounis and their children Alicia, Alexander and Danielle, Catherine (Curt) Vredenburg and their children Claire, Colleen, Cara, and Craig, and Mary Hobbs; 6 great grandchildren; her sister Jean Fox; her former husband Joseph F. Hubel, and wife-in-law Claudia Hubel. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at 10am at Sacred Heart Church, 8227 Brewerton Road, Cicero, followed by a private burial at Onondaga County Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery. With the help of Hospice, her family was able to fulfill her long standing wish of being “carried out of the house feet first.” Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to Hospice of Central New York.
