George Wasickanin Jr.

George Wasickanin, 89, of Cicero, passed away on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, after a brief illness. He was born in Wilkes-Barre, PA to the late George and Martha (Yankovich) Wasickanin, Sr. He was a proud US Navy veteran who served on the USS New Jersey and in the Naval Reserve. He retired from IBM in 1990 where he was employed for 34 years as a Field Engineering Branch Manager. In addition to his service to our country, George took great pride in serving his community. His many years of contributions included roles as a Boy Scout Master, an assistant volunteer fire department chief, and a little league coach. As a member of the Masonic community, he belonged to Memorial Lodge #648 F&AM, Central City Bodies AASR and the Tigris Shrine. George was a humanitarian; he gave many years to The Lions International Club and served as the president of The Lions Club of North Syracuse branch from 1992-1993. He was an active member of Cicero United Methodist Church where he took on many leadership positions. George enjoyed many hobbies, including sailing with the Oneida Lake Sailing Club, woodworking, reading, skiing and golfing. George's pride and joy was his family, especially all of his grandchildren. He always wore the biggest smile when they walked through his door. He shared his passions with his treasured family by taking them sailing, teaching them woodworking, and playing golf with them. George was always there for his family. He showed up for all their life events and made each of them feel special and loved. George had the honor of meeting his first great-great grandchild earlier this year. He was beyond proud of the beautiful family he created. In addition to his parents, George was predeceased by his brother, John; his sister, Doris; his daughter; Kathy Barbagallo on March 13, 2023, and by his son, Karl Wasickanin on July 20, 2023. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, the former Annette J. Burridge; son, George Wasickanin; daughter, Susan (Robert) Rayo; son-in-law, Alfred Barbagallo; daughter-in-law, Linda Wasickanin; ten grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; a great-great grandson, and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be on Friday, January 5, 2024 from 4 pm to 7 pm at Fergerson Funeral Home, 215 South Main Street, North Syracuse with Masonic services at 6:30 pm. Services will be at 9:00 am on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at Cicero United Methodist Church, followed by burial with military honors in North Syracuse Cemetery.
