Joseph W. Mulrooney

Joseph “Will” “Joe” Mulrooney, 92, a longtime resident of North Syracuse and most recently residing at the Hearth at Greenpoint, passed away on Sunday, June 4, 2023, surrounded by his devoted family. Born on a farm in Venosta, Quebec Canada to the late Joseph and Lilian (Rivet) Mulrooney, Will came to Syracuse to live with his loving aunt and uncle, the late Mary and Rhinehart Eppler, after the early death of his parents. Upon graduating from St. Anthony of Padua High School, he began a long career as a printer with the Syracuse Newspapers. Retiring in 1995, he enjoyed keeping the many close friendships he had with so many of his former colleagues and high school classmates. During retirement he also treasured traveling to visit his children and gathering with family on Cape Cod. Will was a kind and gentle soul, a friend to all, and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. On November 26, 1953, he married his high school sweetheart, the former Nancy Moynihan. They enjoyed 62 years of loving marriage before Nancy predeceased him on August 31, 2015. Surviving are his six children, Michael (Mary) Mulrooney of North Syracuse, Susan (Paul) Scampini of Albany, Patricia (Thomas) Blazek of Meridian, Idaho, Martin (Jac-lyn) Mulrooney of Baldwinsville, Marybeth (David) Herring of Rochester, and Carolyn (David) Madigan of Pittsburgh. Grandpa Will cherished spending time with his eleven grandchildren; Matthew (Tara), Amanda (Bill), Emily (Joe), Laura, Gregory, Patrick, John, Lauren (Eric), Marissa, Erin, and Katie. In recent years, he greatly enjoyed four generation family get-togethers that included the laughter and smiles of his six great grandchildren; Stone, Steele, Benjamin, Lillian, Calvin, and Lucas. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Will enjoyed many sports, especially baseball, as a player, a coach and spectator. He was handy with repairs and projects around his home and always made time to help family and friends. Leading a life guided by his faith, he was also active with his church as a youth at St. Anthony’s and continued to volunteer throughout his life at St. Margaret’s and St. Rose of Lima parishes. Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate his life on Wednesday, July 5th. A calling hour from 9 am to 10 am at Fergerson Funeral Home, 215 South Main Street, North Syracuse precedes a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am at St. Rose of Lima Church, 407 South Main Street, North Syracuse. Burial will follow in Assumption Cemetery. Donations may be made, in lieu of flowers, to St. Rose of Lima Church, 407 South Main Street, North Syracuse, NY 13212, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959 or to a charity of one’s choice. The family extends their sincere thanks and appreciation to the staff of The Hearth at Greenpoint for the caring and kindness extended not only to their father, but to the entire Mulrooney family.
